Mr Calvin Mak
Founder and President
Rhombus International Hotels Group
Founder of C.T.E.W. Group and Rhombus International Hotels Group, Mr Calvin Mak has over 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry and has spent time in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver, where he worked for three major hotel chains – Hilton International, Four Seasons and Delta Hotels & Resorts.
In his extensive international career, Mr Mak has been involved in over 30 hotel projects, from developing concepts, design, construction, renovations, opening properties, managing and operating properties. Mr Mak was named ‘Outstanding President of China Hotel Industry’ at the 7th China Hotel Starlight Awards in 2011, ‘Capital Leaders of Excellence Award 2010’ from Capital Magazine, ‘Hotel Industry Master in China’ title at the 10th China Hotel Forum and ‘Top Elite of the Hotel Industry in China’ award at the 9th China Hotel Forum 2008-2009.
In addition to understanding a diverse cross-section of hotel types – downtown, convention, suburban, airport and resort – Mr Mak has extensive experience in market segmentation analysis, targeted sales and marketing strategies, geographical analysis of customer services, and management of various hospitality operations. His experience also includes promoting trade between Europe and Canada as well as establishing international franchises within the transportation industry. Mr Mak’s varied experience across different industries and markets has allowed him to grow Rhombus International Hotels Group exponentially across the Greater Pearl River region, as well as to Chengdu and London, England, with additional future properties worldwide.
Mr Mak is an active member of numerous advisory committees and boards that benefit the long-term growth and development of the hospitality industry. Currently, he is an Executive Director of Membership of China Hotel Investors Alliance, an Honorary Vice President of GHM (Guangdong Hong Kong Macao) Hotel General Managers Society, an Honorary Advisor (Business Field) of Hong Kong Federation of Business Students, an Executive Board Member of the Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners, an Advisory Committee Board Member and mentor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, and is a member of the Hong Kong Hotel Association and the ‘International Who's Who of Professionals’.
Previously, Mr Mak has been a member of the Vancouver International Airport Authority’s Promotions and Food & Beverage Committees, the Industry Advisory Committee for the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program at Douglas College, the Hospitality Administration Program Advisory Committee for Vancouver Community College, a National Director for the Association of Professional Placement Agencies & Consultants (APPAC) and an advisor to the Culinary Arts Advisory Committee of the Toti:ethet Centre. Mr Mak has also been a member of the International Confederation of Personnel Services Association (IPSA), S.U.C.C.E.S.S., B.C. Yukon Hotels’ Association, the Vancouver Board of Trade, National Personnel Associates (NPA), Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and the B.C. Motels, Campgrounds & Resorts Association.
